My research examines the long-term effects of land use change on ecosystem integrity in rivers draining the southern Appalachian mountains. I will assess changes in stream biota associated with hydrologic alterations, along with stoichiometric differences (C, N, and P) in stream food webs across a spectrum of land use. Another aspect of my proposed thesis is the customization of a Stream Visual Assessment Protocol (SVAP) for southern Appalachian streams. My goal is to use this modified SVAP as an instrument for data collection on landscape scales, as well as an environmental outreach tool.
